Erica Austin, Atlanta native and now junior Speech Communication Major at Howard University, made headlines with her Trumpet Award-winning book What Every Child Should Know About Prayer: From a Child’s Point of View. Austin wrote and published the book at nine years old.

Since then her book has been republished, but Erica quest to help others keep up did not stop there. She has recently digitized her book club which focuses on “the other side of Hip-hop – Literacy.” Austin’s message is that Hip-hop is here to stay, and it holds the power to “promote positive social reform in today’s society.” Youth on the Move Achievers Book Club launched its new website, and the site allows those interested to join the book club and also take advantage of several useful resources.

Austin, from a young age, has communicated an inspirational message in her works as an author and public speaker for youth. Her story includes many honors and awards. She was a part of the 1999 Turner Broadcasting Trumpet Award "Meet the Authors" Panel. She also received an NAACP ACT-SO award and was honored by the National Council of Negro Women’s Ecumenical Hall of Fame.

Austin is available for speaking engagements, book signings, conferences, workshops, and other events. She compels young people to maximize their potential and utilize their God-given talents. Austin continues to be an exemplary student and mentor to others.

Here is a small excerpt from her book, What Every Child Should Know About Prayer: From a Child’s Point of View, written when she was nine:

Chapter 3

Being Lonely

Be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never
leave you or forsake you. Hebrews 13:5

Are you lonely? Talk to God. God should be your best friend and confidant.
Because he is always with you, he never has to leave you, because he lives within you.God is your strength and redeemer. He will deliver you from all evil because you are a child of God. You are special to God no matter what. You are his little lamb and you will always be. He made you exactly the way you are. He knows you’re every like and dislike, without you event telling him. Love God. Trust him always. Come, be in his will, he will lead you in the right path. "JUST FOLLOW HIS LOVE."

Erica tells Keeping Up why it is important to Keep Up when it comes to reading:

Literacy is a fundamental skill that provides us with the knowledge to be empowered. As an advocate for literacy, I realize that true empowerment can only come from awareness of what is vital in life. Literacy is so important to "keep up" with because it shapes our thoughts; our perceptions of the world in which we live. To combat ignorance; literacy is bliss!

How Erica Keeps Up:

I manage to focus on my goals by embedding them on the forefront of my consciousness. This means that I am constantly reminding myself of what my goals are, and my plan of action to meet those goals.

Make sure and visit Erica's websites! And remember improving the literacy rate is one of the top ways that will help our people Keep Up! Thanks Erica for being Young and Keeping Up.

That's awesome. I am a proponent of young people making things happen. Especially today they need all the positive reinforcement they can get.
