Are you Living or Just Existing?

Are you living or are you just existing?

I heard an interesting question the other day, “Are you living or are you just existing?” The question hit hard, and made me really sit back and think. Everyday we wake up and do our daily routines. Some of us occasionally alter our daily task, and insert extra activities that come up here and there. But how many people are truly living?

Below is a list of questions to ask yourself to determine if you are living or existing…

Do you wake up and follow the same schedule everyday?

Do you enjoy trying new things and going new places?

Do you feel like you have grown as a person since the beginning of the year?

Have you added any new activities to your life that were different from last month?

Have you overcome a challenge in your life?

Do you take time everyday to enjoy the company of your friends and family?

Do you smile and laugh throughout the day?

Do you set weekly short and long-term goals?

Do you ever do something without putting much thought into it?

Do you feel like your life has a purpose?
Take these questions and answer them every week to determine if you are truly living.
Please take the time to live life! KEEP UP!

-socialite,
when i read this post, just like you it hit me hard and probably hit me harder because i started to tear up as i look back on my life this past year. lets just say instead of having a midlife crisis i had a young adult crisis. i graduated from school, had a 2 major deaths in the family, trying to get a grip on this life after college situation, love life- well lets just say i love hard and trying to weed out the guys who just take up time and for the icing my ex- got married (i'm in the mode of 'niggas ain't shit phase'), friends- who is real, who is fake.. , career wise- man how do i make it to the top with so many people competing for the same thing, do i start graduate school next fall or stick with this fulltime opportunity or follow my dream in the entertainment industry... all in all right now i'm just existing. how do i get out of this slump i'm in, i'm trying to stay afloat but at the same time find the purpose of life right now. keep the ball rolling but at the same time reflect and 'enjoy life' so to speak? have you ever had so many people around you, but still had a since of loneliness? how do you not dwell on your past, or wish certain situations were different? i appreciate this post, because right now while i'm at work i've felt a since of hope. thank you.

Hi daily visitor: So your story just hit hard in so many ways. Like you I had a young adult crisis. (I think we all kind of have that making the transition from college to adulthood.) I graduated from school about a year and half ago, since then I have had the most amazing growth. But it was a lot in between things that were a mess.

1. It took forever for me to find a job between my internship and my first job.

2. My second job was horrible. I mean I like the people at the company and the idea of the company, but I hated everything else. I hated my hours, the environment, and because of the economy they started paying me really late. So not only was I living check to check, but I WASNT GEtting A CHECK.

3. So I racked a lot of credit card debt, because that is all I could use.

4. It then got cold in New York, and I realized I didnt have any money...so I got depressed.

5. I then lost my mother in Feb, and I thought it was the end of the world. She was my bestfriend and I called her for everything. She was truly my rock. I didnt not know how I would go on.

6. I then started losing alot of other people close to me. A lot of friends..thats odd because I am so young.

7. My job kept getting worse, and I feared losing it.

8. I also felt so alone, but like you it was so many people around me.

I started blogging, going to church a lot, and truly trying to have a positive outlook on life. All of this really started making great things happen for me. I got a new job, found ways to still talk to my mother, and really got back on my feet financially.

I take everyday one day at a time, and constantly work towards my goal.

I really answer those questions on my blog, and truly make sure I am living life. Try the following things:

1. Find an activity that you enjoy and do it on a regular basis( blogging for me)

2. Take on a physical activity (gym/yoga for me)

3. Try new activities (sketch comedy and broadway for me)

4. Go to church or however you want to talk to God.

5. Think of the things that go wrong in your life as simple lessons.

Stay positive!

Nice post. Very good timing as the year is coming to a close. I am proud that I have tried some new things this year to improve me and my life.

1) bikram yoga to improve my flexibility and strengthen my back and hamstrings. Huge change for me.

2) working gratis for a startup company to improve my resume and push my job search to the next level.

3) Started my online radio show and watch as is evolves.

Nice post again. keep it up.

From one HU bison to another! :)

I think now I'm living only because I live life on my own terms... I found a job that when I wake up in the morning, I don't have to give myself a pep talk to go to.

I've also surrounded myself with things and people that add excitement to my life. I've also realized that I've yet to get to where I want to be so it drives me not be complacent.

I once used to go through the motions and let life live me and it was really depressing - now I know that if I stay positive - it'll all work out.

Now if I only knew where God was taking me next - and who he was sending me with me...

Great blog!

Mr. Smart Guy: I think that finding a job that you enjoy is key to enjoying life. We spend the majority of our hours working, we might as well find something that we like doing. And I am glad that you enjoyed the post!

As of right now, I'm doing both...living and existing. Outside of school and work, I'm living...in school and work, I'm existing :(

Do you wake up and follow the same schedule everyday?

I used to until I quit my job last month.

Do you enjoy trying new things and going new places?

Well, I just moved to Chicago with damn near nothing to my name to escape the Hell I was living in. lol

Do you feel like you have grown as a person since the beginning of the year?

Definitely!

Have you added any new activities to your life that were different from last month?

Does learning a new city & trying my hand at blogging count?

Have you overcome a challenge in your life?

More than a few & more than a few to go.

Do you take time everyday to enjoy the company of your friends and family?

I don't have many of those, but I'm working on changing that.

Do you smile and laugh throughout the day?

I smile more than I did when I was living in my hometown.

Do you set weekly short and long-term goals?

Yes

Do you ever do something without putting much thought into it?

Can't say I do. I'm definitely a planner. It may look chaotic from the outside, but I understand the intricacies.

Do you feel like your life has a purpose?

I just want to be a husband, then father and make enough money to support my family without struggling. I want for them to have more than I did. If only I could find HER.
