Guess who is Keeping Up? Is it America's First Family?
In a CNN article they pointed out that a guy name Jamall Young had tuned in to celebrate the election of the nation's first African-American president. But he realized that he was witnessing another historic first. A black family was being featured as the first family, not the "problem family" or the "funny family."
Obama didn't shout at his wife, Michelle, to shut up. The first lady didn't roll her eyes and tell Obama to act like a man. No laugh track kicked in, no one danced, and no police sirens wailed in the background.
"The last time we had an image of a black family that was this positive it was "The Cosby Show," but this is the Real McCoy," says Jacqueline Moore Bowles, national president of Jack and Jill of America Inc., a predominantly black organization for youths.
OMG! The Obama's were compared to the Cosby's...You can't be Keeping Up with the Huxtables more than that! lol
No but it is great to finally see a Black family that they do not portray as having all of these problems. They are such a good representation of an ideal Black American family. Barack and Michelle are successful and great parents!
Thanks for truly showing us how to Keep Up!

I read that article on CNN and it really touched me. The image that the family is portraying individually and as a whole is amazing. I think the media portrays a lot of the negative stereotypes of the African American Community and rarely focues on the positives. There was a blog I read a few days ago talking about the images that we see in movies about us and what we would like to see...for me it would be a story like the Obamas story. A true black love story. The Obamas are an example that I see on a regular basis, but very few people see portrayed in the media.
@ Humbly: So true...I see so many representations of great Black families...but they just don't show them alot. I am so glad that we finally have a family in the spot light...so that others can see what we see everyday.
fabulous.
Cute! So wonderful to see beautiful black love ... and so very not in the "American Media" sort of way. I think our President luv loves his wife!!
BLACK love is amazing!!!!!!!!
Soooooo, we'll be keeping up with The Obamas AND the Huxtables!!! Way to give us something to look up to!!!
Families in DC are so proud right now.
Over the past week, I asked hundreds of people to pick a word to describe how they feel about Obama's inauguration. I gave them 26 words to choose from including "Hopeful," "Joyful," "Skeptical" and "Angry." Then I took their portrait with the word.
African American families picked "Proud" more than any other word. But then, so did a lot of people.
The result is this video/photo essay, which is very moving:

I'm really hoping that seeing this will ressurect the demise of the current black family. That we as a whole made an appoint to put more value into the black family and black love. If seeing the first family doesn't change the numbers of single black mothers, then I don't think anything will.
There was a point in time, lets say arond Season 1 of Runs House when I thought that was the ideal Black family that we had to keep up with. But season after season after season the show has become so scripted that I wonder, how can we truly relate to their "reality". Now that Vanessa and Angela are Daddys Girls they have gone to the limit showing our little girls that you can either give back to the community or party, which is weird since when cant we do both. Thank God the OBAMA'S have come into play and are giving us chance to view a real African American Family, they are displaying theirs vaules to the world. I know one thing the Dickersons sure could use a reality show, we may not have it all but we sure do have the LOVE...
@Leah: The Dickersons would be a perfect reality show! Maybe ImKeepingUp will follow yall around and a major tv network will pick it up! Everyone should Keep Up with the love that yall display.
