Today one of "Keeping Up's" readers, Politicista, brought to my attention the following:
Today , FORMER officer Justin Barrett (a white officer) referred to Henry Louis Gates as a " Jungle Monkey"
She asked the following:
What are your thoughts on this matter?
Do you think President Obama will address this in the meeting tomorrow with professor Henry Louis Gates and Police Sergeant James Crowley ?
The Inquisitr reported:
In a “mass email” authored by a Boston Police Officer, he calls Harvard Professor Henry Gates a “Jungle Monkey” among other racial slurs.
36 year old Boston Police officer, Justin Barrett, has been stripped of his badge and gun and relieved of duty without pay pending the outcome of a termination hearing after his department learned of the racially charged email he authored and sent to several other people.

I think it is funny how there was this vast uproar on how black people jump to conclusions and always assume someone is racist, and then immediately after someone does something racist. Sergeant James Crowley you may not be racist, but clearly members of your department are. The fact that the officer thought it was cool to send that type of email, indicates to me that he is use to doing things like this in the office. What does that say about the Boston police department? Come on we are talking about Boston. It will be fascinating to hear how/if Obama addresses this issue.

Yea, I think that racist comment by office Barrett says a lot about Boston police, but, it says even more about the justice system and how closely related it is to racism. Clearly, the police have placed themselves onto a higher pedestal for whatever reason and think they can talk to/about citizens any ole kinda way. The worst part is if you're a minority it's even worse.
This situation with Gates vs. Boston PD did not surprise or even upset me for that matter. Why? Because, I'm from Cincinnati, OH and I don't know if you remember, but, in 2001 Cincinnati erupted w/ race riots because the Cincinnati police dept. killed a black man named Timothy Thomas, and it was like the 15th time in ten years. Not to mention, the numerous times I saw my father get pulled over b/c he was a black man in a BMW.
I've always had the theory that the police are like slave catchers and you better have your freedom papers. Gates had his (in two forms, mind you) and he still got snatched up. Also, I don't know what Obama is going to say in that mtg. w/ him Crowley and Gates, but, I hope that he is insightful, neutral, and intelligent, so, that this problem can be resolved. I also want racial profiling to still be discussed even after this resolution meeting b/c it's a real and ongoing problem.
he went on to say that he didn't mean anything racist by the comment....yeah right!
Good Evening All ,
Firstly I feel honored that you decided to mention my post from yesterday. Thank you very much! My reasoning for asking those questions is because , me and some of my colleagues got into a heated discussion about this.
What people fail to realize is that officers make racial slurs on a daily basis and the majority of the time don’t get penalized for their actions. The reason why officer Justin Barrett was placed on administrative leave was because of the nature of this case (Gates and Crowley) . I guarantee you if the Gates and Crowley predicament never happened, that officer Justin Barrett wouldn’t have been reprimanded the way he was. This is very disheartening to say the least.
'Chris R' , we all know that referring to ANY African American as "Jungle Monkey" is beyond offensive . Former officer Barrett knew this before hitting the send button on that email.
