Howard University Homecoming Step Show 2009 Recap

Most of you got a live blog about the Howard University Step Show via my Tweets on Twitter, but for those of you who didn't...here goes a recap of all of the teams and their shows.

The name of this years step show was: Stepping Through Time...

The host of the show was Terrance from BET's 106 & Park, who for a second turned the show into a segment of just that. If it wasn't for the hundreds of Greeks surrounding the stage, judges up top, and steppers in the back, you would have thought it was the Terrence show.

1st up: Phi Beta Sigma

They had a 1980s theme. They were dressed in white sweaters and blue pants. Their gold chains, and a few guys with wigs, really added to their theme. The best part of the show was the music break, bringing back memories of my fav songs in the 80s and 90s. Congrats to the Sigma's for placing 2nd!

There was a break in the show, and Terrance took time to introduce the judges and Columbus Short, who was the guest judge.

2nd: Sigma Gamma Rho

They had a "West Side Story" theme. This was not a HU chapter, and it was really hard to hear their performance. They left me yearning for the HU team to appear out of nowhere and take the stage. (Who would have thought I would wish that?)

3rd: Iota Phi Theta

They had a Jazz and Blues theme. They went far with their theme, making sure to incorporate real instruments. Despite the musical breaks, I have seen better Iota shows.

4th: Zeta Phi Beta

They had a Black Panther Theme. Their leather jackets were a nice touch, and the hats made it complete. Their 60s/70s slide show opened up their show with a bang. Congrats to the Zeta's for placing 2nd for the girls.

There was another break in the show, where Terrance & Co-host played 90s sitcom themes.

Lance Gross, from House of Payne, took a moment to say hello to his Howard University family.

5th: Kappa Alpha Psi

They had a nerd theme. In their opening video they showed all of the other frats being threatened by the Kappa's, and so they put a spell on them to become nerds. The show started off interesting, but throughout the show they dropped their canes. When your entire stepping career is based on canes, dropping them is a no no.

6th: Delta Sigma Theta

They had a "Red Magic" theme. The show was a disappointment, especially since Alpha Chapter Delta's usually go so hard. The part the crowd did enjoy was when they did a tribute to the Kappa's...doing a few impressive stunts.

7th: Alpha Phi Alpha

The North Carolina A&T Chapter performed. They had a "Coming to America" theme. They had a video where they mocked the opening scene in the actual movie...the Royal Penis scene. They also had "dancer girls" come up and do a little routine before the Alpha's hit the stage.

8th: Alpha Kappa Alpha

They had the 20s, and had a "crazy asylum" theme going on. They wore pink suits, signature for their team. They opened the show with a scary movie, a tower stunt, and did a costume change.

9th: Omega Psi Phi

They had the 90s, and had a "Million Man March" theme going on. They wore all black military gear, with bullets going across their chest. The Que's surprised the audience with an actual theme because they were use to the usual "yard" show the Que's put on. The best part about the Que show was their stunt where they tossed two of their team members.

The winners of this year Homecoming Step Show were:

Alpha Kappa Alpha and Alpha Phi Alpha.

Congrats to all of the teams for wonderful shows. As a past stepper, I understand the time and energy it takes to put on a show during an HU step show. Congrats to the winners...and may next year be bigger and better.

-Keep Up!

Thanks for posting this! I was not there but watched a few videos on youtube. I was really at a loss for what most of the themes were. The only ones that were clear from watching the videos were the Zetas, Alphas, Ques, and the AKAs

I know HU homecoming is always on point and I watched this stepshow on YouTube and it didn’t disappoint! I know the actual game is something worth watching as well and if HU is anything like my HBCU then I know everyone is interested in watching the game from the parking lot and DISH Network has introduced a new product called the Tailgater that allows people to watch their programming while they are away from home. The Tailgater works in all 48 contingent states, it supports HD and SD programming and only weighs 10 pounds! You don’t even need to get a second account and you get the portable dish and the receiver for under $500! I work at DISH Network and I’ve played around with it and I absolutely love it! If anyone is interested in the Tailgater then you can go here http://goo.gl/vd4M4 and get more information!
