Keeping Up Daily..Top News Stories to Help You Keep Up

Fastest way to read the morning news...

The NBA has suspended Wizards star Gilbert Arenas for the remainder of this season for breaking it's gun rules and pleading guilty to a felony charge in Washington D.C. after meeting with NBA commissioner David Stern. Every time I read something on this story it makes me upset. How could someone be so stupid? It bothers me every time another black man jeopardizes his career. There isn't a lot of opportunities just being thrown around these days.

A 16-year-old girl has been pulled out of the rubble in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, 15 days after the earthquake struck. Rescuers say that she survived by drinking water from a bath. Talk about survival! This little girl didn't give up her own life, which is a message everyone should take to heart. Some of us aren't even living under a rubble and give up on our lives everyday.

The FBI is investigating a threat scrawled last week on a bathroom wall in a dorm at Ohio college warning that black students would be killed Feb. 2. Two black students have already withdrawn from school out of fear of their safety. It is probably a prank being pulled by one of the other students, but the incident should not be taken lightly nonetheless. The reason someone had the balls to do this, is because they are watching their politicians and media heads be outwardly racist. Please Lord let us not go back to the days of lynching. This time around I don't think it will work out well for white people.

Kamisha Menns, an attorney and former Associate in the Brussels, Belgium office of Howrey LLP, filed a $30 million lawsuit today in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, Civil Division, alleging that the AmLaw100 headquartered in Washington, D.C., discriminated against her because of her race and national origin. She was the only black attorney working at this branch. She said since her first day she was subjected to escalating hostility and discrimination from colleagues, staff and supervisors. Racism cannot be ignored as a necessary battle that needs to be addressed. It is not the thoughts that linger in someones mind, but it is the actions that come from them that cannot be tolerated.

Its is now 25 years since the recording of Charity hit "We Are the World". And now, for its Anniversary, Quincy has confirmed a new version with all proceeds going to Haiti relief. This version will have vocals from Jennifer Hudson, Sherly Crow, Will Smith and more. This is amazing, almost makes you wonder, 'was this suppose to happen"? Its Exactly 25 years after the Most effective words "We Are the World" were uttered by very important people " and now they can be uttered again, for our generation to really recognize the true meaning of its message, during this tragic time for our people of Haiti! Yes We Are The World......Sure wish MJ were here to make it official :( (Commentary submitted by Lisa B)

Apple launched its new iPad tablet computer Wednesday. The iPad, which will cost between $500 and $830 depending on the model, first goes on sale in the U.S. in 60 days, followed by models with additional wireless capability in 90 days. The new tablet features wireless Wi-Fi Internet connectivity, Bluetooth and, in some models, high-speed 3G cellular connectivity. Apple continues to be the leader in innovative products. This device sounds really cool...it is like a huge iphone!

Fliers comparing Chicago Alderwoman Toni Preckwinkle, front runner for Cook County Court President, to Aunt Jemima are being distributed in the South Side. The fliers, designed to resemble parking tickets and placed beneath windshield wipers, are addressed to "Registered Voters and Concerned Citizens of Chicago" and include a photo of the 4th Ward alderwoman captioned by the phrase "Aunt Jemima On the Meter Box."The fliers seem to imply, although they don't directly state, that Preckwinkle supports Chicago's parking meter agreement with LAZ Parking. I can bet a large amount of money that the person who did this would deny this being racial and only attach it to the parking meter agreement. So why couldn't you just say you don't agree with her...what is with the picture?

The all-star "Hope for Haiti Now" album has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, making it the first digital-only album to hit the top spot. The CD features performances by U2, Beyonce and Madonna, among others. Now this is the type of music that should be made everyday. One's that have messages and can have a positive impact on those listening.
