1. Most enslaved Africans came from Ghana, Mali, and Songhay.

2. Timbuktu, a city in Songhay, was a major economic and cultural powerhouse beginning in the 13th century. Timbuktu then emerged as the spiritual and intellectual center of the Muslim world.

3. Here are eight independent companies that produced all-black films, a number that ebbed and flowed over the years. Foster Photoplay Company, Micheauz Film Corporation, Million Dollar Productions, Herb Jeffries, various projects.

4. In 1946, longtime NYC Department of Parks worker Holcombe Rucker created a neighborhood basketball program to keep kids off Harlem streets. Today, the park is a site of court battles between street ball talent and NBA royalty like Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant.

5. Ralph Bunche, a longtime Howard University professor and active participant in the civil rights movement, became the first African American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
