Headlines:
Toyota's president apologized Tuesday as he announced the global recall of more than 400,000 of the automaker's 2010 hybrid models, including the Prius for problems in their anti-lock braking systems. The worldwide recall involves 437,000 vehicles, including the Toyota Prius and Sai, along with the Lexus HS250h. Toyota has always proved to be a trustworthy auto manufacturer in the past, but I suppose all of that is over for them now.
Republicans are planning on taking President Obama's invitation to hash out their differences concerning the health care bill this month. They will start over from scratch bringing ideas that will emphasize tax incentives and state innovations, and only a modest expansion of the federal safety net. Everyone deserves the right to affordable health care. Hopefully this time they will be able to see this thing through to completion.
The New Orleans Saints' victory over Indianapolis in the Super Bowl was watched by more than 106 million people, surpassing the 1983 finale of "M-A-S-H" to become the most-watched program in U.S. television history. I'm glad to know that everyone was supporting this particular game since it was not only an important win for a football team, but for the comeback of a city.
Google is now preparing an assault on Facebook and Twitter with new social tools for Gmail that will likely incorporate rolling status updates and file-sharing capabilities. The new Gmail offerings amount to an acknowledgment from Google that it needs to raise the competitive metabolism of its social media efforts. This is a good move for Google and along time coming. They are definitely no longer the Internet monopoly and will surely need to keep up with the trends.
Athletes arrived in Vancouver yesterday for the Winter Olympics to discover, there was no winter. There is currently more snow in Washington D.C and other eastern U.S states that in British Colombia right now. Officials are crowning this 'the green games' but Mother Nature might be taking the name a little too literally as some events may have to be canceled from lack of snow. I would be incredibly disappointed to train for years to compete in the Olympics and my event get canceled. Just goes to show you that you can't plan everything.
MyBlackJourney.com is a microsite set up by Amtrak as part of their Black History Month celebration. The focus is on African-American passengers. The site has a wealth of information regarding popular “African-American cultural destinations” that happen to be served by Amtrak. They also have information and travel advice geared towards family reunions and HBCU student travel. I love to see different companies taking part in the celebration of Black History Month. I hope by the end of the month a lot of companies jump on board!
A survivor was just pulled from the rubble of the Haiti earthquake, and may have been trapped since Jan 12th. This is somewhat of a miracle! This goes to show you that you should never give up on your life...not even when it seems like there is no chance you could survive.
Entertainment:
Dr. Conrad Murray was charged with 'involuntary manslaughter' yesterday afternoon for the death of Michael Jackson. Jackson's family filled the first two rows of the small courtroom during the hearing and all say a more severe charge, like murder, should have been given. Additionally, they believe Dr. Murray was part of some larger plan in which Murray is only 'the fally guy'. Wow. This trial will definitely be interesting and hopefully all those involved in this crime will be brought to justice so Michael and his family can rest peacefully.
The epic sci-fi film Avatar was finally knocked out of the leading box office position after seven weeks by romantic comedy Dear John starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, which tells the story of lovers whose romance is curtailed by the September 11th attacks. As good a movie as Avatar was, it's almost amazing anything topped it. I'm definitely going to have to check this film out. Besides, I do love a good love story.
Rapper Lil Wayne will be sentenced today after pleading guilty to a weapons charge last October. His could spend as many as 12 months in jail although good behavior could shave that down to as little as eight months. I guess that just goes to show you that no matter who you are, you do the crime, you pay the time! Smh, rappers just don't seem to learn do they?
Jay Leno will bid us so long tonight as his late-night show 'The Jay Leno Show' comes to an end. Studio guest will be Ashton Kutcher and Gabourey Sidibe. He will be returning to 'The Tonight Show', replacing Conan O'Brian on March 1st. I'm glad all the controversy is over, but I do prefer Conan over Jay. Besides once you quit, there should be no go-backs.
MTV changes its logo and slogan to emphasize their new direction, which doesn't include playing any music videos on the network. The network dropped it's "music television" slogan for the first time in 30 years in what seems like an acceptance of where the network currently stands. This was an appropriate shift, but oh do I long for the days of YO! MTV Raps and Michael Jackson videos playing all day. Looks like those days are well in the past now.
Tyrese has revealed he will star in the upcoming biopic about the late Teddy Pendergrass! Similar to Ray, played b Jamie Fox, the BioPic of Teddy Pendergrass was written while Teddy was alive."We ended up getting really close and that’s like my step-pops" said Tyrese "Thankfully the film is still in motion, I just hope I can make him proud."-Tyrese. I'm glad Teddy P. knew that he was being recognized, and his fans would be able to hear his story, his truth...considering all the crazy rumors regarding how he became paralyzed and all. I also feel good about Tyrese playing him. Should be interesting!
Faith Evans will document her return to the music industry after a five-year hiatus in the new reality series, “It’s All About Faith,” due later this year from producers E1 Television and E1 Music. I saw Faith Evans last year and I wondered if she would ever truly return to music. She looked a little out of place. I think this reality show might provide some good insight on where she has been, and I am eager to see where she is going.
