I have been the biggest procrastinator all of my life, but finally it is starting to effect my work and eating me up inside. I will literally put off a task until the next week, knowing that it needs to be completed asap. So far in my life everything seems to fall into place regardless of my procrastination. I am convinced that one day things will blow up in my face. Because of that, I want to get things in order right away. Below are some tips that are helping me stay on track to dealing with procrastination.
1. Go ahead and make a small list of every necessary work you have to do. I wrote everything out, and then I went back and numbered them in order of importance. I also put them in different categories like: Personal, My website, and Other work related activities.
2. Remove the tasks from your list which you do not have any intention of doing. Sometimes I tend to add things to my to-do list that I know that I will never do, and more than likely it is something that is not that important. Because it is on the list, it gives me the impression that I am not completing everything because I never cross it out.
3. Set deadlines! A task without a deadline can always be put off.
4. Schedule in reward activities for completing certain tasks. You will be more eager to complete the task if you know after you will be able to do something that you enjoy.
5. If you have several items to do, do the small & short ones first. Psychologically it will feel like you are accomplishing a lot, and encourage you to finish the larger task at hand.
6. Arrange for someone to check on you and make sure you are staying on task.
7. Just do it! Next time you hear yourself saying "I'll do it later"....Just do it! It will feel so much better if you do.
