We are a society that is built around approval, praise, rewards, awards, and a number of other things that make us yearn for the approval of other's. But people truly have to understand that you will never be great constantly looking for approval from other's. Those that are the most successful did exactly what they wanted to do...and eventually it became the norm. Being yourself, or different is truly important.
